bump something up: ~를 올리다, 승진시키다
beat: 관할, 구역
"My boss is about to bump me up to the City Hall beat."
- More police officer out on the beat may help to cut crime. (더 많은 경찰이 관할 순찰을 돌면 범죄율이 낮아질 것이다.)
- If you want to get in to that college, you must bump up your score. (그 대학에 가고 싶으면, 점수를 더 올려야 해.)
- We won't bump up her payroll now. (우리는 그녀의 급여를 올리지 않을 거에요.)
pay sombody jack: ~아주 적은 돈을 지불하다
"Metro News One pays you jack."
bean counter: 경리·회계 담당자
"What baby really likes is the thrill of pulling one over on those bean counters."
sack (= balls): 배짱
"You didn't have a sack to face it."
bring/step your game on: 더 잘하게 되다, 실력을 올리다
"You really brought your game up to the whole new level."
- I think we can really step up your game. (우리는 당신이 정말 더 잘할 수 있게 할 수 있어요.)
- I realized I had to step up the game to go to that college. (그 대학에 가려면 내가 훨씬 더 잘해야 한다는 것을 깨달았다.)
- We must bring our game up to beat the competitors. (우리가 경쟁사를 이기려면 지금보다 훨씬 더 잘해야 한다.)
be had by all: 모두가 그것을 즐기다
"Great TV was had by all"
*All had a great TV 라고 표현해도 되지만, 일부러 수동태로 표현함으로서 문장의 의미를 강조
- A great holiday was had by all. (모두가 휴일을 즐겼다.)
- Sounds like a great day will be had by all. (들어보니 모두가 즐거운 시간을 보내게 될 것 같군요.)
crawfish (= crayfish): 가재
"If you ever come to Alabama, my mom throws you these huge crawfish boils."
let it out: 속시원히 표출하다
"Just let it out, they're only tears."
- Just let it out! (속시원히 이야기해!)
- She didn't know the truth until he let it out. (그가 말하기 전까지 그녀는 진실을 몰랐다.)
ineffable: 형언할 수 없는, 설명하기 어려운
"Ineffable means it can't be explained."
- You show ineffable excellence in all things. (너는 모든 분야에 있어서 설명할 수 없이 좋은 성과를 보인다.)
